We have a vision...
  • To help children of all ages and sizes become physically fit through the art of Taekwondo–and thereby become healthier people.

  • To help attention-challenged children learn to focus so that they can succeed in school–and in life.

  • To give at-risk youth powerful, character-rich role models and a place to work out aggression–and thereby build a greater sense of self-worth and respect for others.

  • To give women and children a safe place to learn self-defense–and to feel secure in their home and world.

  • To give everyone–regardless of age, race, gender, beliefs, or lifestyle–the opportunity to gain mental, physical, and spiritual strength, and as a result, make the world a better place.

We’re Tao of Texas Martial Arts,
and we have a vision.

Building better character, one kick at a time!

About the Instructor
CATHY CHAPATY
, founder of Tao of Texas Martial Arts in Austin, Texas, USA, is respected as an empowering and positive teacher with a knack for helping students of all ages and abilities learn Taekwondo. A 21-year martial arts veteran, Chapaty ran her own studio for five years before moving her character development-focused program to a YMCA on the poorest side of Austin. She has taught children with Asperger's syndrome, ADHD, and other challenges; and mentored youths trying to avoid gangs, drugs, and violence. She currently teaches privately.

Her life's work is not confined to the dojang. In 2008, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) selected her to join its Athlete Ambassador program. For a year, Chapaty worked as an education outreach consultant, helping elite and Olympic-level athletes avoid the pitfalls of performance enhancement drugs.

Chapaty has been selected twice to teach at National Women's Martial Arts Federation (NWMAF) Special Training camps, which attract hundreds of girls and women from across the United States, Canada, and Europe. The NWMAF named her Member of the Year in 2011. She is a two-time workshop presenter for We Are Girls!, a statewide girls' empowerment conference. She also has helped dozens of area Girl Scouts earn their safety badges through her self-defense seminars.

An active member of USA Taekwondo, Chapaty has volunteered to help run several regional tournaments and National Junior Olympics, and has supervised volunteers at two U.S. Opens, an international Taekwondo tournament that draws thousands of Olympic-level competitors from more than 60 countries. USA Taekwondo named her National Junior Olympics Most Valuable Volunteer in 2009.

A published author, Chapaty has had dozens of essays and articles published in a variety of media on topics as integrity in sports, anger management, and mentorship through martial arts. In 2012, she was honored by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea for her work.

"Cathy has taught and coached all three of my children and me, for a time, in Taekwondo. Her holistic and passionate approach to Taekwondo instruction has made a positive impact on our family, and we consider her classes to be a part of the training we provide to our children in character as well as physical ability. She approaches martial arts instruction like a life mission and is clearly out to make a positive difference in the lives of young people. I recommend her and her program without reservation, both as a teacher for you or your children and as a business partner seeking to bring a positive change to your youth-serving organization."

"Ms. Chapaty, the teacher, is GREAT with children. This is no Steven Segal kind of stuff. The learning environment she has set up for Taekwondo is wholesome. They take a moment to meditate before class, they learn about basic rules, responsibility, safety, and so on. Our son (almost 6 years old) started on his beginner class three weeks ago and he loves it. And the older kids in his class are very helpful and supportive."

“Ms. Chapaty is an excellent martial artist, a great teacher, and an outstanding individual who teaches martial arts as a means to personal growth as well as physical development. Her classes emphasize personal integrity, courtesy, and hard work–and she’s not kidding, either. She expects students to maintain these character traits not only in class but also in all areas of their lives. Ms. Chapaty is a dynamic instructor who works diligently to keep students focused on task throughout each class–plus she manages to blend hard work and concentration with fun activities!”

“Cathy Chapaty is more than just a martial arts instructor. She is a mentor who embodies all the tenets of Taekwondo: courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and indomitable spirit. She commands a high level of respect from her students, but still manages to make every class fun and enjoyable.”
