Members of gangs and members of dojangs, the
Korean term for martial arts
training halls, are not that different from one
another. In fact, they have
striking similarities. Consider the following:
- Both rely on friends for support.
- Respect is non-negotiable.
- Loyalty is the backbone of the organization.
- Both pledge to fiercely protect family,
friends, and their
corner of the world.
- There is a hierarchy in the group.
- Both honor a spoken and an unspoken code
of conduct.
- Both wear COLORS.
Not so many years ago, members of some dojangs
were actually considered
thugs and hoodlums because they roamed the streets
in Asia and used their
martial arts abilities to get what they desired.
And that is the major difference between these
two groups today: Members of
dojangs use their strength, power, and influence
to help – not hurt –
others. They use their mental, physical, and
spiritual abilities to improve
themselves; to protect themselves, their friends
and families, and weaker
members of their community; and to make the world
a better, more positive
place.
At Tao of Texas Martial Arts Institute, we understand
that life is hard –
especially when you’re young – and
that it’s easier when you have friends
who’ve got your back. We also understand
that that’s one reason gangs are
still so popular among some circles today. At
Tao of Texas, we respect
everyone’s right to live the life they
choose. So if you’re getting
everything you need from your “gang” and
you’re happy with your choice, good
for you. But if you’re not – if you
haven’t joined a gang yet and aren’t
sure that way of life is for you – come
see what the Tao of Texas and the
art of Tae Kwon Do have to offer.
Join a Gang.
Or a Dojang.
It's your
choice.
