Gangs vs. Dojangs

Taekwondo an Alternative to Gang Life

Martial arts practice can transform lives. To prove it, Tao of Texas Martial Arts is partnering with the Austin Police Department’s Joint Juvenile Gang Intervention Unit for a pilot program—using Taekwondo training as an alternative to gang life.

Why? Members of gangs and members of dojangs, the Korean term for martial arts training halls, are remarkably similar in many ways. Consider the following:

  • Both follow a leader.
  • Both rely on friends for support.
  • Respect is non-negotiable.
  • Loyalty is the backbone of the organization.
  • Both pledge to fiercely protect family, friends, and their
    corner of the world.
  • There is a strict and well-defined hierarchy in the group.
  • Both honor a spoken and an unspoken code of conduct.
  • Both wear COLORS to distinguish themselves from others.

Not so many years ago, members of some dojangs in Asia were considered thugs and hoodlums because they used their martial arts abilities to take advantage of others.

Today, though, members of dojangs use their strength, power, and influence to help—not hurt—others. They use their mental, physical, and spiritual abilities to improve themselves; to protect themselves, their families, and their friends and neighbors; and to make the world a better, more positive place. Instead of abusing substances to change their moods, they rely on meditation and hard, endorphin-rich physical training.

At Tao of Texas Martial Arts, we understand that life is hard—especially when you’re young—and that life on the streets isn’t so scary and that bullies at school aren’t so bothersome when you have friends who’ve got your back. We understand the need to feel like you belong somewhere, or that you matter to others—especially if you’re neglected at home. Most of all, we understand that everyone wants and needs to feel respected.

Tao of Texas respects everyone’s right to live the life they choose. So if you’re in a gang and you’re getting your needs met and are happy with your choice, good for you. But if you haven’t joined a gang yet or want to walk away from that life today, contact Tao of Texas MAI and see what transformation is possible through the art of Taekwondo.
